✓ What I love
- Largest global home exchange community
- GuestPoints system is highly flexible (no simultaneous exchange required)
- Authentic homes — often far better than a hotel
- French and English interface and support
- Serious, verified community
- Excellent value for frequent travelers
- Very active in Canada (Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa…)
× What frustrates me
- Annual membership fee is non-refundable if you don't exchange
- Popular destinations have limited availability in peak season
- High-demand cities (Paris, NYC) cost more GuestPoints
- Support response time can be slow (48-72h)
- Mobile app is less complete than the website
My Experience with HomeExchange
I joined HomeExchange in 2022, looking for a more affordable alternative to Airbnb for family travel. The idea was simple: open your home to travelers, earn GuestPoints, and use them to stay somewhere else.
Over 3 years, I've completed 15 exchanges — in Paris, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and the US. I've hosted families from Brazil, France, Germany, and Australia at my place in Montreal. Spoiler: 14 out of 15 went great.
The HomeExchange Referral Program
HomeExchange runs a GuestPoints-based referral program. When you refer someone with your code, both of you receive 100 bonus GuestPoints after their membership is activated.
There's no cash commission — it's 100% points. This is consistent with the platform's model. Sites that promise an "Interac cash back" via HomeExchange can't honestly deliver on that promise.
If you want to use my personal code to get your 100 bonus GuestPoints:
The GuestPoints System — Is It Worth It?
This is the cornerstone of HomeExchange. Without understanding GuestPoints, you can't properly evaluate the service.
Each home on the platform has a GuestPoints value per night. When you host someone, you receive points. When you stay somewhere, you spend them. The value varies between 5 and 100+ points per night depending on location and home quality.
For my Montreal home, I receive about 25 points per night. In exchange, a night in a Lisbon apartment costs me around 15-20 points. That's the interesting arbitrage of the system.
💡 Tip: The most in-demand homes (major cities, summer) get booked 3-6 months in advance. Start planning early for the best availability.
Is It Safe?
The first question most new members ask. My short answer: yes, generally. Here's why:
- Profiles are verified (government ID required for certain features)
- Each member has a visible exchange history and reviews from previous hosts
- The community is tight-knit and serious — it doesn't attract the same profiles as Airbnb
- You can (and should) lock a room or private storage space
In 15 exchanges, I had one minor issue (a broken vase — replaced without drama). HomeExchange also recommends additional insurance, especially for long stays.
Honest Value Assessment
HomeExchange membership costs approximately $150-220 CAD/year depending on promotions. To make it worthwhile, you need at least one or two exchanges per year in destinations where a hotel or Airbnb would cost more.
For a week in Paris as a family (hotel: $800-1,500), a HomeExchange is massively worth it. For a weekend in Quebec City (hotel: $200-300), the math is tighter.
My Final Verdict
HomeExchange is the best home exchange option on the market, especially if you travel 2-4 times per year. The community is by far the largest and most active, the GuestPoints system offers maximum flexibility, and the platform is well-established in Canada.
I recommend it to anyone who travels regularly, values authenticity, and is comfortable with the idea of opening their home.
